Professor Nick Hopkins is Law Commissioner for Family Law at the Law Commission of England and Wales. Amongst other projects, he has previously led the Commission’s work on surrogacy law (jointly with the Scottish Law Commission) and Weddings law. He holds a Chair in Law at Reading University and is an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple.
Financial Remedies – Next Steps on the Road to Reform?
On 18 December 2024 the Law Commission published its Scoping Report on financial remedies on divorce and dissolution. The Scoping Report sets out their findings that the current law does not provide a cohesive framework in which couples going through a divorce can expect fair and sufficiently certain outcomes.

Financial Remedies: The Law Commission’s Scoping Project
On 4 April 2023, the Law Commission announced that it would be undertaking a project to review the current law governing financial remedies on divorce or dissolution of civil partnership.The purpose of the project is to determine whether there are problems with the current law that require reform, and what the options for reform might look like.
